Laundries are small, so it’s essential to keep them neat and organised. Try out these 10 brilliant laundry hacks.
1. Hang Your Ironing Board
Ironing boards are just one of those things. They’re awkward, unsightly, and don’t seem to fit anywhere. Store your ironing board on the wall, or the back of your laundry door or cupboard to keep it out of the way. Simply install a couple of hooks, and voila! Your ironing board finally has a home.
2. Store Detergents in Glass Jars
Storing food in glass jars looks great in the kitchen, so why not in the laundry? Toss the chaotic detergent packaging, and store soap and stain remover in clear glass jars. Plus, you’ll be able to see exactly when you need to repurchase. Keep the jars and containers identical for a contemporary look, or mix and match for a more homely, eclectic look.
3. Install Towel Racks
This is truly genius. Install a couple of towel racks, or even shower curtain rods, and hang coat hangers. Use the area to hang school uniforms, blazers, shirts etc. You can even use S-hooks to hang up cleaning products that are taking up too much space in the cupboard.
4. Create a Laundry Pegboard
Say goodbye to messy cupboards and shelves, and hello to peg board organisation! Once again, this hack works great in the kitchen, so we recommend giving it a go in your laundry. You can hang lint brushes, detergent, mops, brush and shovels, coat hangers and more.
5. Use the Back of Doors and Cupboards
Laundry rooms are usually tiny! Rarely do you have the storage space you need. Utilise the back of cupboard doors by installing storage racks (shower caddies work well). You can even paint the back of the cupboard with chalkboard paint and give every spot a label. That’s fool proof organisation at its best!
6. Keep Laundry Décor White
Here’s a bit of interior design advice: keep your laundry room white. The laundry is a small space with a tendency to get messy and cluttered. Keeping the décor white will lighten and brighten the space, helping it look clean and tidy, even if it isn’t.
7. Invest in a Built-in Drying Rack
Why didn’t we know about these bad boys until now? Built-in drying racks are easy to install, and take up hardly any room, making them perfect for small laundries, apartments, and rainy weather.
8. Cork Boards on the Back of Cupboards
So, if you’ve gone ahead and thrown away your laundry detergent packaging, how is your husband/boyfriend going to know how much stain remover to use? (Let’s face it. They’re much less skilled at doing the washing.) Easy! Install a cork board to the back of cupboards and pin laundry instructions, shopping lists, and other notes.
9. Sock Basket
How many socks go missing in the wash? Get yourself a basket, and anytime you come across a lone sock in the washing machine, put it straight into the basket. That way, when the second sock finally shows up, you’ll know exactly where to find the first.
10. Label Washing Baskets
Label them colour, whites, delicates, wool etc. or label them with each person in your household’s name. No more getting your washing mixed up.
